What Is “The Roses of Heliogabalus”?
Painted in 1888 by Alma-Tadema, this oil on canvas work measures approximately 132 × 214 cm. It depicts a dramatic moment from Roman history, in which Emperor Elagabalus allegedly smothered banquet guests with a cascade of rose petals from the ceiling. This extravagant tale comes from the ancient text Historia Augusta, and Alma-Tadema brought it vividly to life with his signature precision. (Source: Wikipedia “The Roses of Heliogabalus”)
About the Artist: Alma-Tadema
Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912) was born in the Netherlands and became a British citizen. He was a leading figure of Victorian classical art, celebrated for his intricate depictions of Greco-Roman architecture and daily life. Although his fame faded in the 20th century, recent years have seen a resurgence in appreciation for his unique style.
